By granting perverse permission it may be possible to maintain the power to grant permission. To outright deny permission might provoke rebellion; but granting perverse permission may prompt a subordinated person to continue to accept a subordinated status. The participants in the granting/accepting of perverse permission may not be consciously aware of the perverse nature of the situation. They may not be aware of the lack of mutuality and the presence of unjust control. Even so, the subordinated person is likely to feel resentment and tend toward rebellion. When there is a pattern of one person granting another person(s) permission it is useful to ask what function the granting of permission and the possibility of withholding of permission serves. Whose interests are served thereby? Those of the superior only? Those of the subordinate? The public welfare? It is useful to ask whether or not there is genuine love exercised by the power that presumes to promote justice. Is the granting of permission promoting the growth of the subordinated person? Or is the granting of permission a means of maintaining the subordinated person in a state of dependency without awareness of the nature of the relationship/process? It is not helpful for the dominant person to grant the subordinated person permission to rebel. Such a grant is but an example of perverse permission. So also are grants of permission to think independently, be free from guilt, to have privacy, to take initiatives, etc. It is more healthy for the subordinated person to become an independent self and for the dominant person to accept the fact of the other's independence; to recognize the fact that there are situations in which it is unhealthy to grant permission, or to presume that anyone has the power to grant permission. Perverse permission is permission which is granted by someone who presumes to have a power to grant permission---when such power has not been granted to them and for them to have such power would not be in the public interest.
