Often this is a destructive aspects to that tendency. When we personify "goodness" we tend to promote the division of people into two categories; those who are "good" and those who are not "good". Those who are the personification of "goodness" are then regarded as the source of "goodness"---and by logical extension those who are not the personification of "goodness" are at least not helping to solve human problems. Once we have personified "goodness", it becomes almost a logical necessity to look for those people who are the personification of "evil". When this happens the presumed conflict between "good" and "evil" is personified and entrenched in the social fabric. The people who see themselves as the personification of "goodness" join in battle against the people whom they see to be the personification of "evil". Through their judgments such "good" people create barriers to communication between themselves and those who they judge to be "evil". Little do they understand that the most evil act of all is to arrogantly presume to be the personification of "goodness". Those who see themselves as the personification of "goodness" see as good their efforts to get others to conform themselves to a standard of what constitutes "goodness". They judge peer pressure towards conformity in terms of the kind of conformity which the violence is intended to occasion, rather than in terms of the fact that the peer pressure does violence to and alienates the people who are coerced towards conformity in ways contrary to the unique nature which God provided for them to fulfill. The self-righteous further tend to pass judgment upon non-conformists because they refuse to affirm good definitions of what constitutes appropriate human behavior. Thus non-conformists are classified as being evil people. The significant differences between such people are overlooked, and they are treated without respect to their uniqueness. Classifying people according to what they presumable personify is hardly a loving act. It generates alienation, sin, rather than mutual awareness and mutual understanding. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
