Because of their preoccupation with their chosen values they neglect to be in dialogue with people who are different from them. Were scientific leaders to believe that dialogue with different people was very important they would take steps to promote such dialogue. They would seek to understand the process by which young people become different as scientists, and would cease to be in dialogue with many kinds of people. Also of concern would be the ways in which the alienation of one generation of scientists tends to promote even greater alienation on the part of the following generation of scientists---a destructive feed- back-loop in operating. The discovery of the collusions, games of mutual self-deception, would be a matter of concern to scientific leaders who would affirm the value of dialogue. Once they understand the nature of the problem they as problem solvers would take appropriate steps to solve the problem of lack of dialogue between scientists and non-scientists. It is important to understand the difference between the leadership pattern of scientists and of politics. Political leaders are elected by the general public, scientific leaders are not elected by the general public. In fact, they are not elected by any group---except for the few leaders in the professional societies. Those elected leaders, however, usually do not see themselves as political leaders who are concerned with the public welfare; therefore, they tend to have little concern for the lack of dialogue between scientists and non- scientists---except as it affects governmental funding of their professional activities. Thus there is little scientific leadership towards dialogue, because scientists are not held publicly accountable as political leaders. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
