In such situations it is sometimes said that we have not "internalized" our intellectual-rational knowledge. The knowledge does not seem to be integrated into our affective, emotional, decision-making processes. It is as if our being lacked integrity; with only th intellectual- rational part of our being involved in the knowing, but not our affective, emotional, decision-making part. The internalization process would thus seem to be a process of sharing knowledge among the separate aspects of our being. We may wonder if there is a neurological basis for such separate aspects of our being; e.g., the specialization of the various portions of the brain into specific functions. One portion of the brain (one aspect?) may be specialized to deal with intellectual-rational perceptions and another portion, or aspect, may be specialized to deal with matters such as affect, emotion, and decisions. The internalization process might then be the process of transfer in appropriate forms of information from one portion or aspect of the brain's totality to another portion or aspect. Whether or not there is a neurological basis for the presence or absence of internalization, there remains the practical problem of finding ways to integrate intellectual-rational knowledge into the affective, emotional, decision-making totality of a person. There is little value to intellectual-rational knowledge if it does not affect the emotional and decision-making life of a person. Education is rather meaningless if it is not the education of a whole person. The "brain" who lacks integrity is dangerous to herself as well as to others. It is not enough to have administrators who have the specialized job of wisely managing "brains" who lack integrity---for such a specialization fragments the society as a whole and undermines it's integrity. Such a society may not be able to internalize the implications of new discoveries and inventions when they are made by "brains"---with tragic consequences. Communal copying of the pattern of personal fragmentation will not solve the problems occasioned thereby. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
