We may assume responsibility for our own fulfillment, may assume the responsibility for another person's fulfillment, may place the burden for our own self-fulfillment upon a different person, or may burden another person with the responsibility to guarantee the fulfillment of yet a third. Our presuppositions take for granted that fulfillment can be earned or granted as a right, that it may be guaranteed, that it may be achieved/caused, and/or that it is occasioned by the fulfillment of expectations. Our fulfillment does not necessarily come with the fulfillment of expectations--- although it sometimes does. Our fulfillment pertains to subjective realizations, not to objective processes which are subject to human control. Our fulfillment is as much a gift which is beyond control, as it is a goal which is attainable. The more direct and explicit our effort to achieve fulfillment, the more elusive is the goal. Fulfillment is not a gift which we can by intent, planning, techniques, and effort give to another person. Human fulfillment is an unplanned/unsought benefit which is given to those who affirm other's freedom: to be themselves, to sustain their integrity, to communicate with themselves and others without fear. The justified people live by faith, yet not just faith, but rather faith realized in work with power, and expressed with hope through love in an honest way. For us to claim a right to fulfillment is to undermine th possibility of our fulfillment. The more demanding and legalistic is our claim, the more it will undermine the possibility of our receiving the gift of fulfillment. Often the promise of the gift is offered to us, but unconditionally---a way which is not acceptable to us. To accept fulfillment free of conditions is paradoxically experience by us as a threatening requirement; we must accept the "conditions" of an unmerited gift. Such an acceptance undermines our notion of having merited fulfillment, and therefore our notion of our being responsible for human fulfillment. Such acceptance may appear to be evil, thus we may strive to prevent such acceptance of love as offered. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
