There are many ways of making comparisons. The kind of understanding depends upon the kinds of comparisons made. It is thus helpful to take note of the kinds of comparisons which are made, and of the types of situations in which each kind of comparison is most helpful/harmful. In some situations violence is done by seeking understanding through the use of inappropriate kinds of comparison. It is helpful to be able to recognize such violence and seek to avoid being a participant in it. Comparison tools facilitate the recognition of similarities, differences, likenesses, contrasts, etc. in both qualitative and quantitative ways. The following suggests the richness of the variety of comparison tools used by mankind: paintings, sculptures, abstract drawings, scale models, mathematical models, equations, algorithms, verbal descriptions, generalizations, laws, theories, hypotheses, heuristics, myths, allegories, stories, metaphors, visions, dreams, fantasies, novels, dances, music, games, dramas, poems, architecture, gardens, parks, etc. People who specialize in the use of a subset of all tools for making comparisons---tend to lose touch with people who specialize in a different set of tools for making comparisons. They tend to regard each other's modes of understanding as irrelevant---because they do not understand each other's modes of understanding. Their respective modes of understanding are inadequate as means to understanding complementary modes of understanding. Their specialization is alienative to the extent to which it is exclusive. Refinements in their respective modes of understanding will not help them transcend the limitations of the characters of their modes of understanding. Mutual understanding of such alienated specialists becomes possible only as they sacrifice their arrogance and seek to learn to use each other's various tools for making comparisons. This will not happen so long as they value their specialties more than they value mutual awareness and mutual understanding. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
