Technical behavior may be occasioned by a feeling of insecurity and by a desire to achieve a condition which is anticipated to promote a sense of security. Such technical efforts to achieve a sense of security are doomed---as evidenced by the armaments race of the mid 1900's. The failure of technical efforts to promote a feeling of security occasions even more intensified technical efforts to achieve security, as if security was basically a technical achievement. The armaments race is thus an expression of the futility of seeking security through technical means. Technical security which is technically real but which does not promote a feeling of security is a futile achievement---for the technocrats will not feel their success, and will continue to seek greater security. Success is measured by the feeling of security. The technocrat fears that a feeling of security may be deceptive---that one may feel secure when in fact danger lurks in the shadows. Thus the technocrat fears to trust a feeling of security, or any way which makes true security central in daily life. Security is fundamentally an effective reality. In the absence of affective relationships which promote a feeling of security---all technical achievements are impotent and tend to be counter-productive. Children grow up feeling secure if they experience affective relationships from conception through birth and the adolescent years---relationships which make them feel secure through the open communications of love which ultimately values mutuality in honest dialogue: physical, intellectual, and spiritual. Affective ways of promoting security will be ultimately more meaningful than technical attempts to achieve security. Technical efforts tend to undermine the affective ways of promoting security and tend to undermine human meaning which creates the context in which affective openness is possible. Affective ways of promoting security do not guarantee success---and often promote it. Technical attempts to achieve security guarantee success --- and regularly undermine it. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
