Science and technology are impersonal realities
invented to bear the responsibility which scientists and
technologists are fearful to accept. Since the nature of
scientific inquiry and technological activity is
impersonal, those persons engaged in such inquiry/activity
tend to seek impersonal solutions to the political
questions of how to set priorities and how to deal with
the issue of accountability. Thus develops the myth of
"science" and of "technology" as powers which transcend
mere human beings, and which guide the history of human
inquiry/activities. "Science" and "technology" take the
place of the Jews' and Christian' "God of History"---and
they become the driving force which determines historical
development in a predestined way. The nature of the laws
of inter-relationships between elementary particles
presumable "cause" human history. Decisions by mere
humans are but expressions of that historical development
--- not decisive contributors to it. Thus scientists and
technologists have warmed over the notions of the "God of
History", "transcendence", and "predestination".
The depersonalization of the activities of scientists
and technologists conceals the political activities of the
scientists and technologists. If they are but fulfilling
the predestined historical development, they are not
ultimately responsible for the ways in which they consume
scarce human resources such as imagination, creativity,
leadership, sensitivity, communication skills, time,
presence, energy, space, substances, communities, etc.
They and their organizations are not perceived as
political leaders who are in covert ways determining the
course of cultural/community development through the
decisions which they make to serve their personal special
interests. They are not perceived as special interest
groups along with the labor unions, businessmen, and
political parties.
Wiser coping by scientists and technologists as
political leaders will not be possible so long as they are
permitted to live according to the myth that "science" and
"technology" are transcendent powers which guide human
history apart from human political choices.
