Unacceptable people are excommunicated. Only good people are acceptable, others are excommunicated. Goodness is measured in terms of degree of perfection. Perfection in terms of one criteria of conformity tends to be in conflict with perfection in terms of any other criteria of conformity. The person who seeks acceptability in terms of conformity to good criteria thus tends to become exclusive---and thus to excommunicate others who choose to conform to other criteria of goodness. Each seeks to avoid excommunication by going to extremes of conformity. The tendency to go to extremes tends to become compulsive. The society may in subtle ways instruct it's members to choose their specialty and to become exclusively identified with their specialty: physicist, chemist, biologist, mathematician, psychologist, psychiatrist, sociologist, anthropologist, economist, physician, engineer, militarist, sensualist, criminal, drug addict, prostitute, etc. The culture which promotes over-specialization as the way to fulfillment encourages it's members to feel compelled to move quickly from intermediate levels of involvement in any activity to exclusive intense levels of involvement. Intermediate levels of involvement in any activity are regarded as grounds for exclusion from intermediate levels of involvement in any other "turf". Each specialty lays claim to a "turf" and looks with disapproval upon anybody who seeks to roam over many different "turfs". Vagabonds are excommunicated because they do not show respect for the boundaries between the "turfs" of the various specialties. Specialists within one "turf" excommunicate vagabonds even when they have not trespassed on the home "turf"---out of the fear that the vagabond who does not respect other specialist's boundaries will not respect the boundaries around one's own "turf". Under such circumstances each vagabond is in effect instructed to seek a home "turf" and stay put. Straddling boundaries between "turfs" is taboo. There are compulsions to go to the centers of each "turf" and to stay away from the ambiguity of boundaries. Communication is undermined/blocked and alienation/evil abounds. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
