It involves: recognition, admission, acceptance and actualization. Realization involves at least these four facets. We often do not recognize our needs for: affection, relaxation, meditation, exercise, change, intercourse, stimulation, acceptance, forgiveness, love. Often we refuse to recognize such needs because of elusions, delusions, or collusions. Our repression of knowledge about our basic needs may occasion depression. Only if we are willing and able to recognize our needs can we admit them to conscious consideration. Admission of our needs into conscious consideration makes it possible for us to make wise decisions regarding them as adults. If we regard our needs in either childish or paternalistic ways---we can not make wise decisions regarding them. Childish and paternalistic ways we can not lead to wise decisions regarding them. Childish and paternalistic ways merely replay our early thoughtless learning experiences, rather than in an adult way considering our unique situation and how best to respond to it. Recognition and admission of our needs facilitates adult responses to them. As adults we can accept some of the needs which we recognize and admit: and reject others as "false needs". Some of our needs are "programmed" into us by advertisers and other persons who seek to manipulate us to their own advantage. We may recognize and admit those needs, without accepting them as legitimate. They may be very real, and at the same time be illegitimate. As real they will be felt and move us. It is a mistake not to recognize such needs as real. It is a mistake not to admit them to conscious consideration. It is also a mistake to accept them as worthy of realization in a thoughtless way; e.g., through expressions of repressed awareness of them. We realize the needs which we recognize, admit, accept, and actualize. In fulfilling needs we actualize them and realize what they called us to do. We make real that which the needs point to. Illegitimate needs can not be realized because what they point to is a mirage---they promise that which can not be reached. As we seek to realize illegitimate needs the promise fades away or moves out of our of reach. Realization of needs requires an inclusive approach to both subjective and objective perceptions of what is most real to us. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
