The nature of a society depends profoundly upon the response which its dominant members give to that question. In some societies it is everybody for themselves, and people do not get involved in other people's affairs --- unless they are directly affected. In such a society the weak suffer and the strong dominate --- and intervene into the lives of the the weak, as the strong assert themselves to get what they want. In some societies each person's behavior is everybody's business, and everybody intervenes into the lives of non-conformists. The business of society is then to promote stability and conformity with intervention being the rule in instances of nonconformity. Non- conformity is defined to be a crime which justifies intervention. Some moderate societies promote freedom within bounds, and intervention is in order only when a relationship clearly does, or may, violate the rights of non-participants outside the relationship. Thus intervention is justified in the instances of street fights which disturb the peace, child beating by parents, conspiracy to fix prices, and conspiracy to violate other laws. Intervention which is justified in terms of "a clear and present danger" of likely future events --- is intervention which is based upon some theory of cause and effect. The legitimacy of such intervention is dependent upon the legitimacy of the theory of of cause and effect upon which it is predicated. The people who engage in such intervention often do so upon the basis of a prejudicial theory --- a theory subconsciously predicated so as to serve personal needs and interests. Sometimes intervention is motivated by emotional insecurity and immaturity on the part of the intervener---and rationalized by some theory of cause and effect about the likely consequences of the actions of those intervened upon. For this reason care must be taken to determine whether or not the rationalization for intervention really respects the rights of those intervened upon --- and is truly justified by real threat to the legitimate rights of those occasioning the intervention.
