The sadist and masochist give each other pleasure in their perverted ways, the sadist by being abusive and the masochist by accepting abuse. We usually reserve the terms for extreme forms of sadism and of masochism --- and usually for forms with obvious sexual overtones. Such reservation tends to blind us to the more pervasive forms of sadism and masochism which are less extreme and less obviously sexual in origin. Many forms of sadism and masochism are neither physical nor obviously sexual. Sexual frustration may occasion abuses which are exchanged economically, legalistically, moralistically, religiously, verbally, non-verbally, militarily, diplomatically, politely, legally, properly, etc. Sadism and masochism are far more prevalent than we dare to recognize. Probably one of the most helpful ways of working to reduce the prevalence of sadism and masochism is to facilitate healthy, rather than perverted, sexual relationships. Facilitation of healthy sexual relationships will not be done through repressive, legalistic or moralistic measures. Facilitation with be via people who are free to be open with each through an ultimate dedication to facilitating openness and honesty. Sadism and masochism are more prevalent within our educational processes than most of us would care to admit. Within education, abuses take on subtle forms which are hard to detect for those entrapped within the sadistic/masochistic collusions. The sadist and masochist serve each other well and find it difficult to perceive their perversions of love. To them their behavior is entirely conventional and proper according to tradition. They are likely to feel threatened by the specter of genuine love which is unconventional. Professor-student relationships which are non-abusive and intimate are likely to appear unusual and improper against the backdrop of conventional low-level sadistic/masochistic educational relationships. Only when the sexual origins of sadistic/masochistic relationships can be openly acknowledged will it be possible to facilitate more loving relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
