Such conflict of interest occur in the case of: Technical educators, physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, law enforcement officers, lawyers, city planners, science museum directors, and others. In each instance the personal interest of the person holding the position may be focused more upon technical considerations than upon whole persons seeking to maintain their integrity. This is especially true when job qualifications focus upon the technical considerations with inadequate attention to how much of a dedication to openness, dialogue, mutuality, facilitating other persons' fulfillment, etc. there may be. In a technocratic society there is a tendency to require people to choose between technical orientations and non-technical orientations. Thus there are few members of a technocratic society who are qualified to hold jobs involving the above kind of conflicts of interest. Most such jobs are held by individuals with technocratic orientations; as a result the humanistic considerations are slighted. This pattern of debilitating conflicts of interest will most likely continue so long as the conflicts of interests are not brought out into the open. Job descriptions need to more fully articulate the unusual combinations of qualifications which are sought---in order that those most qualified may be rewarded combinations of qualifications. So long as technocrats are rewarded by society for their over-specialization and exclusive interests, so long will young people seek to become narrow minded technocrats. The welfare of society is not well served by such narrow minded technocrats, nor by keeping their conflicts of interest hidden. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
