The affective responses are likely to play a more determinative role with respect to continua educational possibilities---than are the intellectual/rational responses which are probably more important in the perception of the educators. The student who develops an aversion to the subject matter, manner of instruction, personality of the professor, values of the professor, etc. will have been effectively educed in ways which will undermine further intellectual/rational education. Any meaningful evaluation of the educational venture will be cognizant of the significant role of the affective education which runs parallel to the intellectual/rational education. Traditional educational programs tend to be exclusively objective in the evaluative procedures --- or seek to be so, regarding objectivity as ideal. Given such an idealistic perception of the nature of education, affective responses are likely to be ignored in the evaluative procedures --- and so also in the planning of the educational program. Educators tend to teach in ways which will prepare their students for the kinds of evaluative procedures to be used. If the evaluative procedures do not include the evaluation of affective responses, the planning will not include consideration of how to educe helpful affective responses. So long as students are not honored for on their affective responses to our educational programs, so long will their feelings about our educational programs be relatively ignored. Since unilateral grading of affective responses most likely to be unjust, progress will be delayed until mutuality of evaluation becomes possible and is realized. Such evaluative procedures will probably be more in the nature of dialogue than in the form of computer-processed one-letter essays which attempt to characterize a month's work. Meaningful evaluative procedures will most likely not be objective, and so will not be respected by compulsive technocrats. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
