Personal relationships live at many different depths,
depending upon the degree of openness and variety of
communications exchanged. At the superficial level
personal relationships may be very conventional in accord
with traditional behavior patterns in personal exchanges.
In such superficial relationships the participants do not
reveal themselves to each other in any meaningful ways,
any more than two computers playing chess with each other
reveal themselves as persons to each other in playing
chess. Conventional behavior is a means to avoiding self-
revelation. Conventional behavior that may be motivated
by: fear, lack of role models, lack of imagination, lack
of energy for more demanding relationships, social
coercion, etc. Complex societies such as ant colonies
operate very efficiently on the basis of conventional
behavior. Human technocratic societies may likewise be
very sophisticated in conventional ways which avoid deep
human relationships.
Personal friendships go deeper than conventional
relationships, and may live at many levels. Behavior is
not entirely programmed and self revelation is permitted
and accepted. A variety of channels of communication are
used. Personal uniqueness and novel ways of relating are
valued. Even so there may be secrets which friends fear
to share with each other---because of the threat of
judgment occasioned by the social matrix of the culture.
When fear inhibits, sharing personal relationships may
become even deeper as love casts out fear.
Even in the deepest personal relationships it is not
possible to share ourselves with another person
completely; time and energy do not permit, and it would be
unwise to eliminate all mystery---or to appear to
eliminate it all. Even so, it is rare that we approach
the possible limits to the depth of personal
relationships. Most of us have many possibilities for the
development of deeper friendships through communications
motivated by love. No one can wisely tell us what they
should be. That is something which only we and our
friends can meaningfully decide.
