Life-stories convey the meaning of being fully human with a power which is absent from most philosophical/theological propositions. The teller of stories can thus convey much meaning which the philosopher/theologian is unable to convey. Often, that meaning which is not conveyed from one generation to another is lost, and may never be rediscovered. Stories may convey meaning without being objectively true. Human meanings pertain to other than objectivity. Stories may be significant without being "true", "credible", or "respectable". Stories may support or challenge the status quo. The teller of stories may imprison listeners in the perspectives of a dying culture or release listeners from the provincialisms of a given place/time. You can not argue with the meaning-content of a story to prove it "wrong", "untrue", "meaningless", etc. The best you can do is to tell a better story. People's lives are stories which convey meaning to succeeding generations. We each tell our own story according to our imagination, initiative, energy, and personal freedom---to convey a story which is uniquely ours to tell. It is for each of us to invent/discover our own story. We will not do our best if we copy any other story or tell a story we feel coerced to tell because of others' expectations/demands. Our story will not be powerful if it is not an integral part of us. Some stories have no apparent point to them; they rumble on and on without any sense of direction. So also it is with our lives--if we try to avoid making decisions, our lives turn out to be meaningless, without a point. A story is not created by its setting. So also is it with our lives--if we try to blame our environment for our life---we end up not creating any life of our own. A story is created in a setting and so also may tell the story of our life within the environment we have to work with. Our life is the story of what we do with our heritage, resources, opportunities, trials, tribulations, suffering, joys, frustrations, successes, and failures. Our decisions and actions are the essence of our lives, not what we are given to work with. We can tell our own unique story---if we decide to do so. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
