It is misleading to regard the secondary decisions which are symbolic of the ultimate decisions as being equivalent to the ultimate decisions. The symbol is not the same as that to which it points or stands for. Investing ultimate concern in non-ultimate decisions can be debilitating. Ultimate concern should be vested only in the making of ultimate decisions relating to the facilitation of communication and integrity. Doing so will facilitate a divine nonchalance regarding the secondary decisions which may then flow freely within the context occasioned by the ultimate decisions---and thereby reveal the ultimate decisions in the process of realizing them, making them real. Ultimate concern need be associated with secondary decisions as an essential aspect of the realization of the ultimate decisions---even though the particularity of the secondary decisions is not an essential aspect of an appropriate concern. Finite people often are concerned about their finitude and the limited opportunities associated with finitude. In the face of such limited opportunities an ultimate concern may develop about making the "right" choice each time, because there will not be another chance to make that choice. Thus there may be an ultimate concern vested in the particularity of a given choice, rather than in the transcendent issues present in making the choice. It is helpful to keep the transcendent issues as foci of ultimate concern---separate from the particular unique situations in which they arise. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
