The culture's dichotomy nurtures the development of dichotomous selves. The dichotomous selves sustain the culture's dichotomy. In each instance exclusivity, excommunication, alienation, and misleading high values are aspects of the process. In each instance reconciliation is made possible by commitments to openness on the part of participants. The key to healing the dichotomy within self/culture is to make facilitation of dialogue the ultimate concern. Love is the power which facilitates dialogue unconditionally. When so viewed to love oneself is to facilitate dialogue between the essentially different aspects of ones self, aspects which to varying degrees mirror the aspects of the two plateaus of the five cultures allegory. Love acts to unblock communication between the two plateaus within the self as well as within the society. The blockages within self cannot be removed without removing those within society, nor those within society without removing those within each self. Removal of blockages is more difficult than avoiding their installation. We thus need to take note of how the blockages are installed within each of us as we move through the passages of life; how some limited aspect of our self is granted dominance over other aspects of our self, and permitted to repress the latter---to block communication between the dominant aspect and the repressed aspects. At birth we have inherited tendencies to enjoy: physical affection, sounds, sights, color, forms, odors, tastes, food, movement, human relationships, sexual relationships; intellectual challenges, puzzles, logical processes, numerical relationships, symbols, formal communication, self-consciousness, mediation, analytic thought processes, assertiveness, physical manipulations, etc. By self-confident example, nervous responses and counter-examples, rewards, punishments, tangential responses, taboos, collusions, institutionalization, etc.- --we are two-culture acculutrated to dichotomize our being into a dominant and a repressed half---granting half of our brain dominance over the other half, and reducing communication between the two halves. Our dichotomous self is thus born. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
