A denial of either the reality of or transitory character of one or more stages in our life cycle---will tend to undermine our conceptions of truth and values. To refuse to acknowledge our origin is destructive. To try to skip essential stages in our life cycle violates the integrity of the cycle. To ignore/deny the reality of the completion of the cycle also violates the integrity of the cycle. Perversions of the healthy life cycle occasion perversions in our conceptions of truth and values. The healthy life cycle embraces conception, birth, infancy, childhood, adolescence, bonding, parenting, letting children go, retirement, weakening, and death. It involves dependency, rebellion, independence, interdependence; asking, giving, receiving; letting go into intimacy, bonding, releasing, friendships, beginnings, endings, rejoicing, mourning, learning, forgetting. These come to pass. If they are not permitted to come to be, or if they are not permitted to pass, troubles are occasioned. Our conceptions of truth and values depend upon our healthy growth and development---through the natural developmental stages of our life cycle. The blockage of our physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, sexual, psychological, social, political, and/or self-concept development---will have profound consequences in the rest of our life cycle and in our conception of what is true and valuable. People who tend to think in terms of eternal truths and absolute values are generally insensitive to the process of human growth throughout the healthy life cycle. They tend to absolutize some developmental stage as final, and to deny the propriety of others. They value some status quo rather than process; and disagree with each other as to which status quo is to be valued most. They can not see the process of the healthy life cycle clearly---and so they can not see the process of truth and values going through their developmental stages. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
