What happens now is determined by the past, not the future. The present is but the boundary between the past and the future. Cause and effect operate in terms past causes and present effects---or in terms of present causes and future effects. Purpose pertains to intended future processes and effects. Present processes are directed so as to fulfill desires and expectations regarding the future. Purpose pertains to the future, not to the past. Even though a purpose may be present, its focus is future. If you ask a person why they did something, quite often the response will be in terms of future-oriented visions. We explain our behavior with language which suggests that intended future conditions cause our present behavior. We save money because we want to go to college. We build flood control dams because we want to avoid floods. We work for a political candidate because we don't want to be victims of the opposition candidate. Our present behavior is "caused" by our vision of possible future situations. The physical scientist is disinclined to accept an for explanation for elementary phenomena; and at the same time is inclined to explain all complex processes in terms of elementary phenomena. This orientation tends to exclude purpose as a category for explanation of any phenomena---including personal and social relationships. Thus an exclusively objective orientation tends to inhibit the use of relevant categories in situations which call for holistic understanding. Understanding is occasioned by the use of relevant categories. The categories which are relevant to elementary particle physics are not all relevant to nuclear physics. The categories which are relevant to nuclear physics are not all relevant to atomic physics. Similarly on up through physics of gases, liquids, solids; the chemistry of inorganic and organic molecules; the biology of cells, organs, organisms; psychology, sociology, anthropology, geology, astronomy, theology, etc. For any group of people to claim universal relevance for their specialized categories is arrogant---especially when the claim is exclusive in its implications.
