The nature of the discipline and obedience depend upon: (1) The origin of the expectations, (2) The nature of the expectations, (3) The degree of acceptance/internalization of the expectations, (4) The congruence of the expectations with the essential self, (5) The internal consistency among the expectations, (6) The roles of violence, fear, mis- representation, punishment, reward, bribery, intro- jection, repression, etc. in maintaining the control which is essential to discipline and obedience, (7) The power which seeks to maintain discipline and obedience. When discipline and obedience become ultimate concerns they become idolatrous. They usually grow initially as means to desired ends---but often keep growing until they presume to be more important than the initially desired ends, and so arrogantly pass judgment upon those desires. Discipline and obedience are not ultimately good, nor are they ultimately evil. To classify them as good or evil is to become confused. Self-discipline is not necessarily better or worse than external discipline. They differ from each other only in the location of the division between the source of expectations/motivations and the agent who is expected to fulfill the program through obedience to the discipline. In self-discipline the location of the division is internalized and the self becomes fragmented into two or more parts---playing the roles usually assigned to separate beings. So long as love is free, to maintain integrity such fragmentation is not ultimate and the self may continue to live and love. When the program of discipline and obedience pass judgment upon love and banish its dedication to openness and integrity---then fragmentation and sin grow, and the self ceases to live and love; self dies. Self's body may continue to metabolize and behave according to some systematic program of discipline and obedience---in the manner of an automaton. Such is the existence of the living dead. They do not know the discipline of and obedience to Love. They worship instead human creations which lack the power of Love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
