An exhilaration is occasioned by involvement in the process of escaping from imprisoning taboos. Reaching for freedom is exciting. Violating taboos may be a reaching for freedom. In a sexually repressive society, violating the society's sexual taboos may generate sexual excitement. The taboos designed to make sexual relationships undesirable may generate extra pleasure for those who seek to escape the taboos. Thus the taboos generate a new context which changes the nature of sexual relationships relative to the nature of sexual relationships in the absence of taboos. Those who seek to justify taboos thus deal with the natural consequences of their taboos as the basis for justifying their taboos. Methodologically, this is potentially a process of begging the question; for the decision to enforce a taboo may generate the justification for the decision. At the same time the decision to enforce a taboo may generate pleasures which will ultimately motivate the overthrow of the taboo. Thus the enforcement of taboo may lead technocrats to perceive increased need for the taboo and non-technocrats to perceive increased motivation for escaping it --- thus doubly intensifying conflict between counter-cultural tendencies. Members of the two complementary cultures may thus perceive and act in terms of opposite perceptions of the nature of the situation--- each gaining excitement and some kind of meaning in the process. Taboos are counter productive for communities because they generate alienation, between technically and non- technically oriented persons. Taboos do not promote reconciliation --- the transcendence of sin. Taboos are thoughtless and heartless. Taboos operate in ways which can be programed into a computer---reactions to specific situations are specified without respect for the wholistic nature of the situation. The confrontations between the oppressors and oppressed generate excitement of a violent sort and occasion violent actions. Thus sexually oppressive societies are characterized by violence of many forms --- not all of which are directly associated with sexuality. In such societies it is via collusions taboo to perceive the origin of the various forms of violence--for to do so would undermine the taboos which generated the violent reactions.
