In a play, the actors' relationships are structured by the script which they follow. In some plays the actors are given the freedom to ad-lib some, or many lines; their relationships are less structured --- even though the plot of the play is rather well defined. In our daily living many of our relationships are similarly structured according to a rather well defined plot. We fill social roles and act out friendships according to rather traditional patterns. Our relationships are highly defined by our social context. The meanings of our actions and words depend upon what has happened, is happening, and is likely to happen about around us. However, when our actions become exclusively determined by our context, we find that our actions and words cease to have humane meaning --- they become mechanical. Unstructured relationships demand more of us than do highly structured ones. They demand more creativity and emotional involvement than most of us are willing to give to our daily living. Thus, we often take refuge in various degrees of traditional patterning of our personal relationships --- to conserve energy. It is tragic, however, when some people become threatened by perceiving others engaged in the development of unstructured relationships. Fear may be engendered in us by our watching another person do that which we fear to do. If the fear engendered in us is strong enough, we may object to the other person doing what we would fear to do ourselves. We may feel that we have a right not to be emotionally disturbed by the knowledge that another person is trying to do what we fear to do. Such a feeling creates serious problems pertaining to human rights --- problems which are really dilemmas and probably can not be solved in technical ways. It is very difficult to technically structure situations which promote the development of unstructured relationships. Technical means often undermine non-technical purposes. Non-technical purposes thus pass judgement upon the value of technical means---and technocrats tend to react in defense of favorite techniques. Those reactions tend to make it more difficult for people to creatively develop humane unstructured relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
