Such experiences can only be imagined imperfectly by those who have always lived all of their lives either in prison or outside of prison. Reports of coming out experiences by those who have had them can be very helpful to those still in prison, and to those who have never been in prison. Such reports can promote mutual awareness and mutual understanding. They should be made during or soon after the experiences, while the experiences, feelings, and thoughts are fresh. Memories of the essence of the experiences can fade rapidly. It would not seem difficult to elicit such reports. Yet it is often very difficult to do so. Most prisons are not constructed out of physical walls and bars. Most prisons are constructed out of childhood experiences, social traditions, personal prejudices, taboos, inhibitions, fears, legalism, collusions, etc. The person who is coming out of such prisons is escaping --- and must do so without attracting the attention of the prison guards. In such a situation, to make a report of the coming-out experience is to make a confession which may undermine the escape effort. The escaping prisoner cannot be sure of whom to trust. Thus, reports of coming out experiences are often not made---and the understanding which might be gained from them is lost to mankind. Coming-out experiences are common to homosexuals, sexually inhibited heterosexuals, legalists, religious fundamentalist, house-wives, militarists, super-patriots, etc. Society cannot benefit from reports of their coming- out experiences so long as society does not ultimately value all free communications and openness. Many of society's problems originate in the frustrations of imprisoned citizens; citizens trapped in destructive prisons and so in need of liberation. The destructive potential of those frustrations can be reduced with the help of insights gained from the reports of the coming-out experiences of those who successfully escape. Thus, confessions of such escapes need to be given fail-safe contexts, else our frustrations may ultimately gain expression in violent decisions and actions. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
