Often people think, behave, and feel as if the attainment of a goal would bring satisfaction by itself. Such a perception takes for granted that an objective situation can occasion a subjective reality apart from subjective prerequisites. Attainment of a goal, successful competition, fulfillment of expectations achievement of objectives, winning a battle, etc., are objective situations. Satisfaction related to them is enjoyed only by those who at the subjective level are ready to share joyfully in real living. Satisfaction is never achieved as a goal. Fulfillment of expectations, goals, and objectives will not always bring personal fulfillment in the sense of subjective satisfaction. Completion of a task may bring meaninglessness --- if meaning was dependent upon idolatrous immersion in the task just completed. Thus achievement of a goal may bring despair rather than satisfaction. The technically oriented persons may find it very difficult to enjoy satisfaction --- because they are likely to seek it as a goal to be achieved through systematic efforts. They often to seek to refine techniques for getting that which they desire, and also seek techniques for preserving that which they get. Such an approach to satisfaction will cause satisfaction to rise out of reach, even as a flood of troubles rises around the person clutching for satisfaction. Personal satisfaction does not follow from satisfaction of objective criteria. Personal satisfaction is a gift granted to those who do not seek personal satisfaction as a goal, but who are willing to accept it as a gift which has not been earned and is not deserved. Thus, those who think they have a right to personal satisfaction --- are not free to accept it when offered, and they are rarely offered real satisfaction. because they live in the world of I-It relationships. Real satisfaction is a reality of the world of I-Thou relationships: A world which is not dominated by goals, achievements, objectives, techniques, competition, possessions, winning, expectations things, analysis, logic, etc. Thus, real satisfaction is rare in a society dominated by a profit motive.
