Why should this be the case? People presumably would like to know what the future holds for them by understanding the likely consequences of their political decisions and actions---the implications of their highest priorities. Yet when a person within a society begins to clearly spell-out such consequences without fear, then the close associates of that person tend to excommunicate that new prophet. Most often the new prophet is experienced as a threat against the comfortable collusions of the society---collusions which will lead to its future downfall. Members of most societies and their political institutions have relatively short-range goals---and prophets speak to the long-range consequences of the society's unbalanced short-range goals. Many of the unbalanced short-range goals must be given up due to their long-range consequences. Yet, to give them up is to give up many of the comforts that the people have grown accustomed to. This they do not wish to do. They resent anyone who calls upon them to give up their comfortable way of life. Thus they resent the prophet who clearly spells-out the long-range disaster which will be the consequence of their unbalanced short- sightedness. Rather than deal realistically with the truth spoken by the prophet, people often seek to maintain their comfortable ignorance. When the prophet goes to the another country he or she may enter a society which is not trapped by collusions in the same way as the home country. Thus, the members of the far country may be more able to accept the message. It is also easier to accept it from the child who did not grow up playing in the sand lot next door. Old people find it difficult to accept wisdom from young people who grew up in their midst, especially if the wisdom undermines their comfortable collusions. The same is true of peers.
