This continues even when it is recognized that many forms of insanity are destructive relationships between an individual and that individual's closest associates; rather than a condition essentially interior to the individual. It might be helpful for psychiatrists to balance their narrow focus upon individuals, with a focus upon the nature of a profession such as physics. A profession is fully capable of repression, projection, delusions, fear, hope, depression, etc. in the sense that members of the profession via collusion share in these responses to their environment. The professional collusion operates to make destructive behavior appear professional and normal. A helpful psychoanalysis of a profession cannot be based upon the assumption that the essence of the problem is interior to the profession. It will be necessary to study the relationships between the profession and all the rest of the community of which it is a part. This necessity is parallel to the necessity for an analysis of the relationships between the individual psychiatric patient, and the patient's associates. The psychoanalysis of any profession will be facilitated by individuals who are aware of psychiatric modes of analysis entering the profession, and thereby observing the socialization process as it acts upon them during their entry. Such individuals may be mature adults who in their later years shift professions, or they may be mature adolescents who have NOT lost their ability to see what is being done to them during the socialization process---and are encouraged in their analysis by mature adults who are aware of the need for the psychoanalysis of the profession. Only such "outsiders" can be in a position to give a helpful description of the essence of the profession's approach to reality. "Insiders", due to their participation in the profession's collusions, are unable to see clearly what is taking place. Most professions are likely to resist any effort to break down its collusions. Often the collusions are what give the profession its sense of importance and meaning. Anyone who threatens the collusions is likely to be treated with less than respect and consideration, and so find it difficult to advance within the profession. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
