Exclusive concerns are equivalent to warring ancient
Greek gods. The ancient myths point to the reality of our
warring inappropriate ultimate concerns. These concerns
might co-exist, if they were not each regarded as being of
exclusive importance---having the power to repress other
concerns, interests, and desires. The concern for
quantitative comparisons leads to inclinations to measure
which concerns are "greatest". It is assumed that the
greatest should dominate, rather than complement other
concerns. The monopoly of objectivity/analysis cannot
transcend its own blindness and so excludes subjective
pointing to incommensurate realities.
Absent such subjective pointing, incommensurate
realities become unreal; they cease to exist for all
practical purposes. The myths about warring gods are not
taken seriously---and the warring within ourselves is not
taken seriously---so long as no equivalent means of
pointing exists. The baby has been thrown out with the
bath water.
The technocratic society needs to regain means for
pointing to non-objective reality. This will require the
breaking up of monopolies---including philosophical and
theological ones which only have the appearance of
diversification. Vertical and horizontal integration of
philosophical and theological systems must be recognized
and the monopolistic agents revealed for what they are.
Such agents may be: (1) unexamined assumptions, (2)
attitudes, (3) traditional values, (4) collusions, (5)
value structures, (6) manners of approach.
Too often the leadership of monopolies withdraws from
community, and lives in ivory towers, corporate
penthouses, posh suburbs, and government mansions. In
their isolation they lose touch with common people and
their problems(dilemmas?), and forget how to serve the
public welfare by serving the common people. In their
fantasies such powerful persons see themselves as
inheriting the earth which is being inherited by the meek
who serve as resident suffering servants in the valley of
the shadow of death.
