The energy crisis has come through mankind's' failure
to deal with finitude realistically on board spaceship
earth. Through collusions men have felt that their
salvation lay in fulfilling trends characteristic of a
technocratic society. The operative operative unexamined
assumption has been that through improvements of
techniques the impossible dreams of today can become the
realities of tomorrow. Thus educational programs have been
funded to train the technocrats who have then been granted
the political power to set priorities, because there has
not been real citizen power to affect decisions and action
through communal setting of prudent priorities.
There have been a few prophets who have asked that
cost-benefit analyses be considered. Some have pointed
out that often less is better. A few have recognized the
limitations of science when it comes to offering mankind
hope and meaning. Yet, many technocrats continue with
their declarations of competence to try to use techniques
to transcend the problems generated through their previous
use of similar techniques. While they may be able to
compute accurate confidence limits upon their measure
measurements, they through their collusions cannot call
into question their blind confidence in the refinement of
their techniques.
Until citizens recognize the limitations of science
and transcend their own collusions---they will not acquire
the citizen power to deal with finitude through setting
priorities which take seriously the finitude of spaceship
earth. It must be recognized that techniques do not
generate hope and meaning. It must also be recognized
that the net effect of many individual personal decisions
--- may be tragic compared to the net effect of corporate
decisions made in the light of a collective awareness of
the interdependent system which is alive on finite
spaceship earth.
The solution of the energy crisis will not be found
in additional resources and techniques for acquiring and
consuming them. Rather, it will found in new values and
ideals which are given helpful meaning within the fail
safe context of a value-system which is collusion free,
and so promotes team-work to deal with finitude honestly.
