It is giving without expecting anything in return. A real person who is able to love has no qualms about self-sacrifice, and does it gladly when called for. Yet it is not called for, except in the eyes of the one who loves. There is no obligation in Love. If there is obligation, it is not Love, but love, which is jealous, and often cruel. Love transcends the self. Self is still existing, but on a plane so far removed from daily trivial happenings, they don't really matter. There daily activities still exist and are still done, but it is known that there is something higher, the feeling of Love. There are different degrees of love. The most common is between husband and wife, romantic love. This love is the hearts-and-flowers romantic feeling, most often termed "in love". It is mistakenly thought that a person can only be in love with one other person at a time. When one has Love, it is not true. Rather, the person who has Love is in love with life, and Loves anything/one that has a semblance of life. Filial love is a degree of Love. Hopefully, it is begotten of Love. But that is the exception, rather than the rule. Most often, what is termed filial love is just a shadow of Love, not a degree. Parental love, too, is often not based on trust and understanding, but on distrust, and the feeling of obligation. Parents often feel that they cannot be themselves in front of their children, but must be paragons of virtue. They feel that they must hide facets of themselves from the children; their inner thoughts, and feelings. Love is not a commodity to be bought and sold. Rather, it is learned, and acquired over time. There is no way to teach another to Love; it must come from within. Those who have learned to Love can only be examples to those who have not. But the ones who love with Love usually do not understand the higher Love. They must reach the level themselves before they can understand it, fully. This means that persons who Love must be careful not to show their Love to certain people who would not understand, and therefore fear the implications, with this fear resulting in possible harm for the one who Loves. Yet it is hard for one who Loves not to show that Love to others. It is not easy to put a rein on Love, as one who Loves wants to share with other the joy and inner calm to be had.
