In the American society social convention has reduced the use of this channel of communication to a few limited areas: violence, sex, and formal hand shakes. One of the major accomplishments of the technocratic society has been the elimination of touching from the violence of war. Through touching there is too much in the way of disparate messages which are inappropriate to war. Thus the technocrats have been put to work to eliminate touching from war. Via guns, airplanes, bombs, missiles, etc., not only do murderers not touch their victims, they are not permitted to be troubled by having ever seen them. Violence has been abstracted. Emotional responses have been eliminated. The technocratic society has also gone far toward the elimination of authentic meeting in sexual states of consciousness. Sexual fulfillment is often regarded as the result of the successful use of techniques developed by technocrats who are presumed experts in solving sexual problems. All too often analysis and techniques block dialogue and so sexual fulfillment. For some, pornography is a technique for having sexual states of consciousness (of limited sorts) without touching. The focus is upon technique rather than emotional dialogue and reciprocity including touching. Our American society has a place for the formal handshake, but even so there are expert technocrats ready to teach techniques of its use in manipulation. Through its great emphasis on verbal analysis and verbal communication, and its emphasis on full control through various techniques, the society has reduced instinctive communication through touching. To touch someone is to influence them. There are taboos which inhibit touching others in the literal sense of physical contact. Within academic institutions it is sometimes the case that it is felt inappropriate to touch others even figuratively. It is felt counseling must be non-directive; one must not let personal feelings influence the student --- one must not touch the student. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
