Often part of the goal is to keep self as self is. It is the other that is to be manipulated and changed. This may be accomplished via techniques which make it appear to that self is different than self is known to be, but it is not the intent in technique to really change self through the use of technique. However, through the use of technique self may in reality change self dramatically, without awareness of, and much less full control of, the changes which follow as natural consequences of certain patterns of the use of technique in the absence of authentic meetings. Technocrats make use of techniques to solve certain problems: Expand and speed up technical channels of communication, prevent certain diseases, facilitate, transportation, expand technical training, plan for comfort in old age, avoid pain, prolong life, govern more efficiently, manage information more efficiently, delay death, entertain more efficiently, cause good feelings, inhibit violence, control crime, promote creativity, improve intelligence, manage the genetic pool, insure salvation. Success at each stage constitutes encouragement that techniques can be devised to succeed at even higher levels. At the same time there is a continuing process of redefinition of what constitutes success, so that further "successes" are made possible. The original goals are perceived to have been "unworthy" of the improvements in techniques and so new goals are selected which are more "worthy" of the modern techniques. That which has become possible thereby becomes desirable. In these ways techniques open up limitless vistas for human fulfillment- --or so it seems to the technocrat. There is some doubt about the survival value of the endless utilization of techniques. Liberal arts colleges have the opportunity of helping students both know and understand modern science. It is not enough to become expert in the techniques of modem science, It is also essential to become aware of the limitations of science so that scientists may serve the needs of real persons who seek hope and meaning within authentic meetings.
