The opportunities for growth seemed endless and so it came to be that goodness and growth came to be equated. The good economy is the one which is constantly growing. The good nation is the one with an increasing population. The good college or university is the one which opens each fall with more students. The good business is the one which outgrows its old quarters. The good government is the one which each year offers more services to the citizens. The good city is the one which is constantly attracting more business and manufacturing firms to create more jobs. The good student is the one who is always internalizing more information. The good library is the one which has a constantly growing collection of books and journals. The good bar is the one which has the most extras on it. The good means of transportation is the one with the most speed and the greatest comfort. To suggest that less is better would be grounds for suspicion of anti-social tendencies. However, we live on a spaceship earth which has only so much of all the different essentials to life: air, water, land, energy, minerals, soil, animals, plants, and beauty. Absolutely no aspect of humankind can continue indefinitely to grow a percentage bigger each year: not the number of people, not the possessions per person, not the gross national product, not the amount of knowledge, not the energy consumption rate, not the amount of pleasure, not the number of books, not the number of journals, not the number of schools, not the miles of highway, not the number of restaurants, not anything. A finite spaceship can not sustain a constant percentage growth of anything. The crew of the spaceship will via political decisions and actions regulate the use of scarce resources, or else suffer the natural consequences of excesses and/or depletions. Many of the natural resources are recyclable and essentially indestructible; however, life forms and energy are not among those. The crew of spaceship earth needs the able assistance of attractive scientists if the crew is to have survival value. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
