The great power of such states of consciousness to influence the decisions and actions of men and women may be traced to the essential role which they have played in the evolution of and the survival of the species. The sexual states of consciousness contrast with and compliment those characteristic of rationality, analysis, good and evil, and full control. As with all states of consciousness there are only ill-defined boundaries between the sexual states of consciousness and others. Because of the natural consequences associated with persons sharing in sexual states of consciousness there have evolved many traditions and/or taboos to assist in the partial control of behavior associated with intimate relationships. Such traditions and/or taboos were sometimes helpful within the historical era which devised them. When such an era has passed it is not enough to violate the outdated traditions and/or taboos, even though they may be agents of alienation. They must be transcended. The adolescent who spends all his time rebelling against his parents is still being dominated by parents in his rebellion. To be free of his parents, the adolescent needs to become mutually aware with and mutually understanding with his parent. He must put away childish ways, even though he sees in a mirror only dimly, if he is to become free to choose. Persons who feel most secure in the states of consciousness characterized by rationality, analysis, good and evil, and full-control may be greatly threatened by the taboos and the perceived dangers associated with sexual states of consciousness. Except within a fail-safe context the emotional security of such persons is most likely to be protected via avoidance of intimate relationships; through physical separation, imposed standards, technical solutions, full-control, the knowledge of good and evil, repression, collusion, tangential responses, etc. Such protective techniques are likely to be major factors in preventing the integration into the physics profession of feminine persons who might otherwise become attractive scientists whose real presence within physics departments would helpfully change the self-image and the state of consciousness of physicists who have not fully ceased to live.
