Unfortunately it is not always those who have a given power who are aware of the way in which it corrupts. One must be in dialogue with those who are the victims of the corrupted power to discover the way in which the power has corrupted those who exercise it. Dialogue between those who abuse power and the victims of the corrupted power may be impossible, because of a natural fear of the victims that honesty will have little survival value. This makes it all the more important that those who exercise power sensitize themselves to the ways in which their power tends to corrupt them, and lead them to do violence to those who do not share in the power, but nevertheless are subject to it. Colleges and university trustees, administrators, and faculty are perceived as exercising power. Rarely are students perceived as exercising power, even when they do exercise power, which is not often. Usually students are subject to power, but do not in reality participate in it, even though there be open procedures for such participation. Thus students are often the victims of the power which tends to corrupt trustees, administrators, and faculty. A number of steps may be taken to minimize the tendency for academic power to corrupt. Trustees, administrators and faculty may honestly seek to gain a mutual understanding with students of what the nature of reality appears to be to the students. Steps may be taken to encourage student honesty; not through words, but through changes in grading and certification procedures, to encourage honest education---rather encourage the submission to training violence. The abuse of power in colleges and universities may set the example for the abuse of power by alumni in their political decisions and actions. If institutions of education (through which civic leaders usually have passed) are insensitive to human suffering, civic leaders will find it difficult to be sensitive to human suffering. Power corrupts, and desensitization is a sure sign of corruption. As people cease to live they become insensitive to self and others, and so inflict violence which perpetuates the process via a powerful feed-back loop. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
