It is commonly said that we live in a scientific age in which technical competence is essential to the survival of the society. It is said that to get ahead in the world the young person needs a good education and that the technically competent have a significant advantage over those who do not develop technical skills. Yet the voluntary expression of student interest is not often directed towards scientific and technical expressions. It may be helpful to consider the contrast between the dominant focus of popular songs and the traditional focus of science education. Popular songs both directly and indirectly deal with the central issues of what it means to be human in the present context. The channels of communication used go beyond the syllogistic use of words used in typical scientific analysis. Attention is called to realities which can not be ensymboled. Through a combination of words, rhythm, melody, instrumentation, inflections of voice, volume, body language, etc. popular singers communicate messages which motivate young people to give their attention and to participate in the music, songs, and dance. If modern scientists are to communicate effectively with young people, it may be helpful for them to understand how it is that others do communicate effectively with young people. This is not to say that naive copy-cat procedures should be followed. Yet, when you wish to communicate with persons who speak a strange language---it will be wise to first learn their language by studying the way in which those who use the language effectively do communicate with each other. Having learned the language, it may be possible to communicate your own messages by making use of the new language. It must be recognized, however, that certain languages facilitate the communication of some messages, and may not facilitate the communication of other disparate messages. Perhaps in this---scientists may learn other things from popular songs. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
