These two roles are the ones most blocked by collusions---and least assisted by formal educational processes. These two roles touch too closely to dealing with finitude---to be dealt with honestly by persons who to ignore their finitude. At the same time, rational solutions to perceived problems all too often block instinctive solutions to the problem of fulfilling basic human needs. Thus, there is often debilitating confusion with respect to sexual states of consciousness, courtship, sexual bonding, reproduction, developmental stages of children, personal fulfillment, stages of maturation; and death and birth. Institutions of higher education are one of the major courting grounds of modem society. Some students very consciously make use of campuses for that purpose. Others via collusion avoid a conscious awareness of this function of colleges and universities. The union of intellectual activities , courtship grounds, and certification-for- power which is found in institutions of higher education should be a cause for concern, especially when such institutions are dominated by technocrats who do not know their own feelings, or the feelings of others through mutual awareness and mutual understanding. Through the combination of roles played by colleges and universities, they play a determinative role in the nature of the society via the self-images, techniques and unexamined assumptions passed on to the next generation of mothers, fathers, corporate managers, military leaders, and political followers. So long as citizens do not have realistic conceptions of the full cycle of life processes --- so long will the citizens be the victims of the technocrats who seek to help those who lack courage: to help them make reality appear to be what it is not --- always youthful, always beautiful, fulfilled through possessions, hopeful through techniques, and manageable through scientific understanding. The young people of today are enslaved by circumstances which are different than they were for the young people of many years ago. If liberal arts colleges are to liberate them to live creative lives, the liberation process must be appropriate to the existing enslavements.
