The self that knows no 'Thou' can not be a real person. Without authentic meeting there is no incarnation. In isolation there is no hope and meaning. The self and other may grow together in ways which are impossible in isolation. There is isolation which originates in other than physical separation. That which is most real to self and other may be perceived to be within each, rather than in relation. That which is most real may be perceived to be outside each and outside of relation. That which is perceived to be most real may not involve relation. Then self and other become but atoms, bumping into each other and others as 'Its' but not within any meaningful personal relationships. Relations are perceived as processes which took place in the past---which runs up to the last instant before now. For such people relations are not known in the eternal now. The self and other become what they are in a mythological context. Perhaps they are the victims of the whims of gods. Perhaps they are the servants of spiritual powers they know not, and can not control. Perhaps they are the victims of the whims of scientific technocratic planners. Perhaps they are the servants of powers they known not, and can not control. The meaning which self and other can make real---depends on the mythological context in which they find themselves. The quality of their meeting is in part an expression of the social context which created them, and which they in turn re- create. Self would approach other. But how? What is the nature of other? Is it safe to approach? Is there a fail-safe context? Dare one speak the primary word 'I- Thou'? Is it safer to speak the primary word 'I-It'? What was the previous experience? What has happened to others in the past? What has happened to self in the past? Is it true that other depends upon self for its nature? Can self help other be other than what 'It' is? Can other be analyzed, to understand 'Its' nature before meeting? What does one say after one has truly said hello? Is there any technique for dealing with questions such as these? Or, must they be dealt with in Other's Way. What are the limitations of science? (c) 1999 by Paul A.
