When so regarded, modern man is likely to regard miracles as impossible---and so as the figment of imagination and fantasy. Scientists are under compulsion to regard such miracles with suspicion, and so seek explanations through analysis in terms of cause and effect. Such is demanded by their state of consciousness. The nature of their reality is dependent upon their states of consciousness of people and upon their ways of participating in reality. For these reasons miracles are not real to them. Some people are aware of the essential uncertainties of life. They may be in a state of consciousness such that they seek that which they know not, except as something which transcends imagination and fantasy and so is apparently essentially impossible. It is their state of consciousness in which the event is so impossible as to be beyond regarding as a real possibility: To be freed of a collusion in which one is a participant victim---is beyond imagination; because it is terrifying. To transcend unexamined assumptions and lead a life free of their implications may be beyond imagination. To be accepted without first meeting conditions of acceptability may be unimaginable, and threatening. To perceive nature as an expression of orderly process and at the same time be full of hope and meaning---may be unimaginable for persons in certain states of consciousness. Miracles are events within which that which was unimaginable as becoming real---invades the state of consciousness of the self, and presents itself as real and helpful. The transformed self points to the reality which was regarded as impossible, and declares it to be real and meaningful. Even in retrospect it may transcend human understanding, although from within the new states of consciousness there may be mutual understanding of the event. The dominant focus is likely to be upon the hope and meaning generated by the event, rather than upon any analysis of the event. This is likely to frustrate the desires of observer technocrats---who would like to analyze miracles into elements outside the context of human relationships. Such is one of the essential mysteries of life. All real living is in meeting. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
