This motivates humans to find in new situations---similarities with familiar pleasant previous situations. The new which partook of the unknown---thus becomes the known, and fear is reduced. Before birth the known is an all enveloping warmth and uniformity of environment in space and time. At birth the new environment is fearful, but may be made bearable by the familiar envelopment of the warmth of mother. Through a series of developmental stages self encounters new experiences, with the affection of the envelopment of the warmth of mother serving as the fail-safe home-base of operations. The home-base is essential to fail-safe exploration of new objects, new locations, new persons, new thoughts, new feelings, new questions. If the home- base disappears, becomes unreliable, or becomes threatening; exploration is curtailed. Curiosity which leads to dangerous exploration must then be brought under full control. Initiative must be limited to doing again what did not hurt last time. The very first few years are critical in the development of the self. The lessons recorded in these years are the rock bottom foundation on which all else must be built. The lessons which are recorded in the earliest years are often non-verbal and are uncritically entered into the record for future reliving and recollection. The educator who wishes to encourage students' exploration of new ideas, new questions, and new experiences---must build on the foundation which has already been laid. If the new structure does not fit the foundation, it will not stand. The instructor can not build the structure. Only the self can do that. The instructor may guide and positively encourage students by providing a fail-safe context and timely offerings of new questions, alternatives, educational resources, and relevant fundamentals. This can not be done effectively under the full control of any organized educational program. It may be done in the context of authentic meetings which involve many complementary channels of communication. Scientific behavior is essentially adult behavior. Authoritarianism and childish venting of compulsive emotional responses both inhibit scientific behavior. The improvement of science education is one with the encouragement of mature adult behavior.
