Failing to fulfill expectations may be regarded as the basis for ridicule, punishment, banishment, ostracism, personal indifference, excommunication, etc. Such a state of consciousness is typical of those who presume to the knowledge of good and evil. The child who experiences such interpersonal relationships upon trying new ways---records in his childhood memories the experiences, his emotional responses, and his interpretations of them---most likely in non-verbal forms without the benefit of adult analysis. One of the likely interpretations of being hurt in trying new ways---is that it is not wise to try new ways. At a less tragic level the interpretation may be only that it is not wise to try certain ways. The negative emotions may be associated only with certain types of activities; such as science experiments, science courses, talking with scientists, or anything else having to do with science. The student who associates unpleasant personal experiences with early science relevant experiences---is likely to program self to use techniques to avoid repeat experiences; e.g., to use physical separation, playing games, condescension, collusion, etc. At a more tragic level a student may interpret early experiences of being hurt in trying new ways related to science---as meaning that self is essentially incapable of scientific behavior. The foundation is thus laid for an authoritarian state of consciousness---with a self-image of self being beneficiary of those who are capable, and who have authority to speak and work with confidence. A collusion may develop wherein the participants agree as to who are the benefactors---and who are the beneficiaries--- with respect to science; agreement as to who are science- competent and who are science-incompetent. It is possible for most participants in the collusion to be apparently satisfied with this arrangement. The way out of such a collusion is to seek ways of educating future mothers and elementary school teachers and with the help of attractive scientists who can provide a fail-safe context in which to have pleasant science relevant experiences---in place of can't-win experiences.
