Because of finitude all real persons must attempt to fulfill only a portion of all that they in their imagination might fulfill. Differing persons deal with finitude in different ways. Some have the emotional security to do so consciously with mutual awareness of how people cease to live. Others via collusions select dominant foci for their lives which are cosmetic solutions to the problem of finitude. When the dominant focus of a person's life is a cosmetic solution to the problem of dealing with finitude, that person will find in hard to engage in genuinely helpful behavior. Some of the not too helpful dominant foci of scientists include: precision in early science instruction, the early introduction of sophisticates theories, the use of much sophisticated factory-made equipment, academic puzzles rather than real problems, research in place of dialogue, etc. Because of the nature of scientific work, scientists naturally have a narrow dominant focus to their individual life. Thus there is a greater than usual danger that they will cease to live as real persons. Real students who are aware of and fear this possibility may therefore &void science courses and the possibility of science as a dominant focus for their lives. In order for real students to be attracted into science they will need to see via the incarnations of attractive scientists that it is possible to have a scientific dominant focus and remain a real person in authentic meeting with others. It will be helpful for some real students to select as their dominant focus a concern for improving communication between scientists and non-scientists. Such students may engage in political action which will encourage scientists and non-scientists to seek to transcend their alienation. The alienation, however, will not be eliminated by the creation of a new speciality that studies it intensively. Scientists who have dominant foci which do not involve people and their real problems are likely to develop an ultimate concern for some created thing which does not merit ultimate concern. Such idolatry is destructive of real persons. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
