A group which has been fragmented does not have the power to jointly engage in decisions and actions. Thus any program which fragments a group may be used to render it less powerful and thus more susceptible to outside management. Fragmentation leads to surrender. Within academic institutions students are divided according to their major field of study. They have been divided away from the working world just by virtue of being inside an academic institution. They have by the same technique been divided away from the political world. By virtue of the modern invention of adolescence they are separated from meaningful involvement in authentic religious communities. The fragmentation of modern institutions serves to divide students into groups of differing states of consciousness. When the youth of the society are thus divided, the technocratic society is in a better position to intensify itself by helping the young people conform themselves to the needs of the technocratic society. Education ceases to be education, and becomes instead a training process which helps young people become acculutrated to the realities of the technocratic society. Their brains become washed of the new questions which they might have asked of technocrats. It need not always be so. Not all students become the victims of the fragmentation which characterizes modern institutions. Some manage to maintain their integrity through dialogue with real students who seek to be helpful to others. It is difficult in a technocratic society to find a way out. For, in an effort to avoid falling into a trap, one may become suspicious, and so divided away from others. One may seek security in techniques which have alienation as their natural consequence. One may seek emotional security in a degree of certainty which exceeds what is possible due to the essential uncertainties of real living. No divisive actions can be an effective defense against principalities and powers which tend to divide and conquer. The only way to transcend forces which tend to divide and conquer is to seek ways to facilitate dialogue and authentic meeting through the development of an ability to understand each other's strange language. To do this all must slow down, and listen and read more often, and speak and write less often. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
