Many parents become aware of such stages and do not expect a child to skip any stage in an orderly maturation process. Different children may time their progression through developmental stages differently. Yet the pattern is basically common to all children---with respect to the order in which stages are passed through. Over many years Piaget has carried out extensive research to become aware of the structure of the intellectual developmental stages of children. They are difficult to comprehend due to the ways in which observers may participate in reality with the child. The reader who is interested in a proper understanding of Piaget's work and its implications for science education should read some of Piaget's works in the original, or in translation. Caution should be exercised to avoid considering some perversions of Piaget's findings as equivalent to the actual findings. Such perversions are perhaps an inevitable consequence of the profit motive, and of the equipment syndrome within our technocratic society. Whatever the normal child's developmental stages may be, it is essential to the improvement of science instruction that they be respected. A greater mutual understanding of the developmental stages relevant to science instruction is to be desired. At the same time few instructors are making use of even a fraction of the information now available. What is lacking is not information, but the freedom to see its relevance in personal relationships involving real students. Even where there is an awareness of the relevance, instructors may not have the emotional security required to be trying new ways which make helpful use of such information. Few have the necessary wisdom and freedom to be true to themselves and others in open and honest relationships. Through a greater focus upon students' science relevant experiences and upon their emotional responses to them---instructors may gain a mutual awareness of the sequence of learning experiences which will be helpful to students. However, if the dominant focus is always upon developmental stages there is the danger that children will be used, rather than helped. Children need the help which attractive scientists are free and qualified to give. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
