Thus, while local particulars of reality are considered, it is not their particularity which is the focus of attention. It is that to which the particulars point---which is the focus of attention. With insight, observations may, through imagination and fantasy, lead to generalities which transcend the particulars which inspired them. Thus a person is able to transcend his or her particular experiences, and point to realities which transcend particular processes. It is human nature that through imagination and fantasy people conjures up visions of an endless process of transcending the particulars of existence. People seek hope and meaning in a quest for complete transcendence through rational analysis and skillful manipulations in the world of 'It'. The self who is engaged in developing accurate descriptions of the world of "I-It relationships" may naturally become impressed with the ability of self and other to develop highly sophisticated and successful descriptions--so impressed as to unthinkingly operate in terms of the unexamined assumption that self perceives all with a clarity equal to that of the numerous successes. Through the operation of collusions---vanity is given great freedom, and it becomes impossible for self to recognize and honor accurate reflexive descriptions of the condition of self and other in "I- Thou relationships" --- thus prophets are ignored. The selves who have engaged in the rational analysis of the human condition are no less likely to fall into this trap. The process can lead to an insensitivity to the primary human realities and relationships, because of the dominant focus upon theoretical structures which "explain" the human condition. The dominant focus can too easily shift away from real problems and dilemmas; shifting instead to rational explanatory theories created by man in the process of losing touch with reality. Creating theories is often more comforting to self---than comforting to others. Self may seek hope and meaning in the quest for complete transcendence through rational analysis and skillful manipulation of the world of 'Thou'. Yet as selves transcend intimate relationships, they cease to live. This is an important description of the nature of reality. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
