Educators who are the victims of this simplistic approach would do well to consider the hierarchy of values to which real students are dedicated. Students' behavior and learning are just as much determined by the hierarchy of values which they bring to their educational situation, as they are determined by educators' performances. A given instructional performance will educe quite different responses from students who bring quite different value structures to the instructional performance. The fact that the instructor may be imprisoned in a role-playing situation does not necessarily imprison the students in the anticipated complementary role playing situation. One of the values to which students may be dedicated is the avoidance of becoming imprisoned in role-playing. Students are likely to be dedicated to authentic self expression, and to the defense of their personal integrity. Should anyone or any group attack what students value most, students will follow the traditional way of forming alliances with those of like perception and feeling---creating a mutual protection society. The effectiveness of such a society often depends on secrecy - -- to keep the enemy from knowing of or understanding its strategy. One of the best ways to keep secrets is to have few who know them. In the present case one of the best ways to keep strategy secret is for all to keep it subconscious, and further to form a collusion to the effect that there is no secret strategy. The tragic effect of these techniques, whenever they are used, is the alienation of persons from self, from each other, and from reality. Such alienation is the natural consequence of any extended attack upon the central values of any coherent group. Thus, science educators will do well to avoid attacking the non- scientific values of their students. It will be helpful to educe those non-scientific values, and profess self's own values; then let all be free to discuss and choose to which values they will dedicate their lives in suffering and sacrifice.
