The word is herein used in a different way. A very young person may behave in an adult way. This is most possible if the person is aware of his/her sources of authority and her/his sources of emotional responses, and has the freedom to choose to affirm them (or not). If they are appropriate (or not) to the present---depends not only upon the knowledge of cause and effect, but also upon an adequate level of emotional security. The presumed knowledge of good and evil can have a debilitating effect in that it is usually used only in the service of alienation. Early man is pointing to reality in the myth wherein Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden---for presuming to attain the knowledge of good and evil. The true adult does not presume to possess the knowledge of good and evil, for it generates alienation, rather than helpful behavior. The scientist may have great expertise in the knowledge of cause and effect. If she/he at the same time presumes to have the knowledge of good and evil and/or lacks emotionally security---she/he will not have the freedom to choose helpful behavior in authentic meeting with real students. Without the power to behave as an adult, the competent scientist can not be helpful as an attractive scientist. The scientist's sources of authority and emotional responses may be traced to childhood relationships with parents in early infancy and to personal relationships with all who helped or hindered in the development of his/her self image and her/his image of the nature of reality. the channels of communication which are operative in these processes are quite varied. To the extent that they escape conscious awareness, the messages they communicate may escape adult analysis and so over- power rational analysis, leading to unwise decisions and action. An effective program of science education will empower students to behave as adults. A science education program is not effective if it does not empower students to behave as adults in wise political actions. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
