Between the above two extremes there are many other activities which many humans confuse with either or both of the above extremes. The following will suggest some of the full spectrum: 1. Bowing down before a King or Queen. 2. A Court-Jester amusing a King or Queen. 3. Actors and singers bowing to the audience. 4. People standing as the judge enters for a trial. 5. People standing for a major political candidate. 6. People kissing the hand of a noted dignitary. 7. Ritualistic washing of hands and feet. 8. People showing deference to a domineering leader. 9. Black people showing deference to a white person. 10. Women showing deference to domineering men. Some of the above rituals may serve helpful purposes. Some of the above rituals serve destructive purposes. There is wisdom in being able to recognize, acknowledge and be in dialogue about the places that various human activities lie on the spectrum from Symbolic-Ritualistic to Purely-Practical. Be-Together in the Many-Gracious ways of Shalom. (c) 2007 by Paul A.
