When issues and conflicts are understood, presented, formulated, and/or dealt with in terms of either/or questions and answers: 1. People often chose up sides, regard themselves as the "good" people, and regard their opponents as the "inferior", "bad" or even "evil" people --- who are alienated. 2. Issues which are in reality characterized by colorful spectrums of alternative possibilities --- are mis-represented as issues in "black" and "white". Honesty is lost, and through dishonesty and deception, people are alienated from each other. 3. Complementary affirmations come to be seen as contradictory statements made by opponents on opposite sides of battles for "righteousness". Soldiers on each side of the battles regard themselves as fighting for "righteousness" --- and combatants are alienated from each other. 4. Fear dominates, and combatants come to distrust those of their own "kind" who are inadequately enthusiastic about defending their side of the artificial dichotomy --- against the strange people on the opposite side of the artificial dichotomy. Alienation increases. 5. Because of their alienation, people lose touch with each other, misunderstand each other, and justify themselves in terms of the logic of pre-existing prejudices and confused perceptions. Misinformation is not recognized as such --- and so becomes the basis for further alienation. 6. In the absence of recognition of the ways in which alienation is augmenting itself --- alienation grows at an exponential rate; and hope is lost. The thoughts, desires and behaviors of dichotomous people are dominated by primary categories which belong to dichotomous pairs: EVIL GOOD REJECTED ACCEPTED EXCLUDED INCLUDED NON-CONFORMAL CONFORMAL UN-DISCIPLINED DISCIPLINED POLLUTED PURE IMPERFECT PERFECT DISOBEDIENT OBEDIENT NON-TRADITIONAL TRADITIONAL INFORMAL FORMAL SUBJECTIVE OBJECTIVE TEMPORAL ETERNAL IMPRISONED POWERFUL IMPOTENT DOMINANT SCANDALOUS RESPECTABLE POOR WEALTHY PHYSICAL SPIRITUAL SECULAR RELIGIOUS THEM US ENEMY FRIEND TRAITOR LOYAL DIFFIDENT ENTHUSIASTIC HUMBLE CONFIDENT DOUBTFUL CERTAIN RELATIVE ABSOLUTE FALSE TRUE COMPLICATED SIMPLE FAITHLESS FAITHFUL SEXUAL CELIBATE FEMALE MALE UNCONVENTIONAL CONVENTIONAL In the light of the dichotomous contrasts between such paired words/concepts --- thinking and decision making is reduced to a sequence of either/or questions and answers. Each challenging situation is approached with one or more dichotomous pairs of mutually exclusive terms in mind, and analyzed accordingly. People who approach situations with different pairs of primary words often come to different conclusions and find it impossible to trust each other fully. Alienation grows, and understanding and cooperation decline in the darkness which settles upon the dichotomous peoples. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
