Covert forms of dishonesty entail misleading behaviors which encourage others to assume something to be true which is not in fact true---such as in failing to correct another person who has assumed and said that something is true about you --- when it is not true. But what is one to do when people make public statements about your private behavior --- based upon false assumptions? Is one to surrender one's own privacy for the sake of defending the truth? Is one to hand to other people the tools for assaulting one's own privacy when they make false statements about one's own private life, so as to force one to say things about one's own private life to defend the truth? Who then is to blame for the false impressions that persist about one's own private life? There are other occasions when (for lack of time, energy and opportunity) one fails to correct false impressions which people express. In some such occasions the failure to offer corrections play a significant role in contributing to dishonesty. It is worse, however when one contributes overtly to promoting ignorance, confusion and/or prejudice --- and later excuses one's self for saying things which are not accurate, clear or free of bias --- due to one's own ignorance, confusion and/or prejudice which one's own behaviors had contributed to. Sometimes people think themselves to be honest because they do not go around making false statements --- but do go around in denial of true statements which other people have made which are experiences that are threatening to one's own collusive games of mutual self- deception. It is dishonest to systematically be in denial in tacit ways about embarrassing truths --- even if there is no overt denial of any truths. Refusing to acknowledge important truths can be dishonest even in the absence of any overt denial. When we fail to recognize the many forms of dishonesty we may think that people who are contributing to a climate of dishonesty are honest people. When we do so, we, ourselves, contribute to the climate of dishonesty which prevents us from dealing effectively with the threats to our personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
